Rev. Dunkley's Letter on True Father's Seonghwa Anniversary

August 29, 2026
Smile in the Storm

Fourteen years ago, one of the most controversial religious figures of our time passed away. For Reverend Sun Myung Moon, neither controversy nor the risk of death slowed him down. As history shows, changemakers are rarely welcomed by the minds they have come to change. For those who knew and loved him, the controversy was nothing we were afraid of. If anything, it simply confirmed that pattern.

Whether speaking to young people in the East or West, to religious leaders, scholars, presidents, or leaders of nations divided by ideology, Reverend Moon was never afraid to speak the truth with a smile. God is not distant. God is our parent. And if we learn to relate to God that way, then enemies do not have to remain enemies, religions do not have to remain strangers, and people divided by history can begin to see one another as brothers and sisters.

Of all the achievements Reverend Moon accomplished, I would say the greatest single accomplishment was to find and marry Dr. Hak Ja Han. She testifies that from birth and from her earliest memories, she understood that God was her parent, that she was God’s daughter, and that she was called to do a great work. She dedicated her life to peace, to represent all that is holy about the feminine, all that is holy about the motherly aspect of God’s character, and to substantiate that calling together with the man who also, from a young age, felt called to bring about a world of peace.

Together they established the standard of True Parents, working beyond race, nationality, religion, and creed to share something so simple and yet so profound: that upon the foundation of salvation through Jesus Christ, the blessing could now reach the family and the lineage. Through the marriage blessing movement, they brought enemies together, religions together, and young men and women together with the intention of establishing the building blocks of the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.

Not a distant heaven. Not a heaven unseen. A heaven that can be experienced and should be experienced here on earth, in a living relationship between God and humanity as parent and children. Husbands and wives, children and grandparents, families and communities together embodying the many different characteristics of God’s infinite heart.

That is why this couple has meant so much to so many. We were given not only a vision to fight for, but a garden within which to grow and bloom. A garden open to all people, all faiths, and all nations.

Today, on Father’s Sung Hwa anniversary, that image carries a deeper weight. I think of Father watching Mother continue the work, praying that wherever Mother went, a flower garden would bloom. That was not only a prayer for her mission. It was a prayer for us. A prayer that the love of God would take root in our families, our communities, and our history.

So today we say thank you, True Father. We remember the life you lived, the truth you declared, and the price you paid without hesitation. And we will continue to stand with True Mother through the many challenges we have grown all too accustomed to, for the sake of liberating the heart of God, who has waited so long to see humanity happy.
